I came across a squashed can in a carpark in Napier City, New Zealand. It had been raining and the can stood out as a burst of colour on wet tar seal. I took a photo of it and later decided I wanted to paint it larger than life. I wanted to glorify an ordinary bit of street rubbish. Elevate it’s position if you will. Once I started the piece I really enjoyed the folds of the aluminium that had been flattened, the crimps and distorted branding. A mass produced container designed to hold an alcoholic beverage, carelessly discarded, driven over by vehicles and left in the rain had gained a sort of beauty in it’s transformation.
